That rapid head movement could generate nystagmus was already known to Bárány in 1907, but it was Vogel who introduced head-shaking nystagmus (HSN) into clinical practice more than 20 years later. Head-shaking (HST) is one of the high-frequency tests for the noninstrumental clinical evaluation of vestibulopathic patients.
